A warning for dog owners - in the last week, four pet food companies have announce recalls over concerns products could be contaminated with salmonella.
This does not just pose a threat to animals, but also to humans who handle the food. The FDA says two children picked up salmonella from one of the recalled products.
These are the four products being recalled:
- Raws for Paws: 5-pound and 1-pound sealed plastic containers of Ground Turkey Pet Food. The affected packages were in cases with codes 9900008, 9900009, 9900014, and 9900015. The recalled pet food was sold in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin as well as online.
- Darwin's Natural Pet Products: several lots of Darwin's Zoologics dog food, including Zoologics Chicken and Vegetable Meals for Dogs manufactured on 11/2/17, and Zoologics Duck and Vegetable Meals for Dogs manufactured on 11/16/17.
- Redbarn Pet Products: 3-packs of Redbarn Naturals 7-inch Bully Stick dog chews. They were sold nationwide and have the expiration date 112120ABC stamped on the side. The UPC is #7 85184 25105 8.
- Smokehouse Pet Products: 4-ounce bag of "Beef Munchies" dog treats. They have the UPC Code: 78565857957, Lot number: 449294 and are marked with the Best Used By Date of 10/25/19.
If you have any of these products in your home you should stop using them immediately.
The symptoms of a salmonella infection are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever. The symptoms typically last four to seven days and most people recover without treatment. However pets do not always have symptoms, which for animals include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite. They can also pass salmonella to people, even if they don't have any symptoms.
