Area schools to offer free meals during closures

BALTIMORE — Several Public School systems announced that they will hand out free meals to students during closures.

Baltimore City will operate eight emergency food distribution sites across the city from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this upcoming Monday through next Friday.

Three meals will be available for students 18 and under, and those 18 and older with disabilities who participate in school programs at the following schools:

The district will also be working closely with their partners and Baltimore City’s Emergency Food Working Group to identify additional options for meals the week of March 23.

Baltimore County:

Beginning Thursday, Mar. 19, BCPS students may pick up breakfast, lunch, and dinner at 69 locations, including three new sites: Carriage Hill Apartments, Saddle Brooke Apartments, and Woodmoor Shopping Center.

Students must be present to receive meals in the parking lots of the locations identified below on weekdays through Mar. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools is offering curbside pickup of hot meals at 31 school sites or the 21 additional mobile meals sites and kids will receive a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a single pickup from noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Mobile meals vehicles will deliver meals to 21 additional sites in six communities on weekdays as well.

Meals are provided free of charge each day. Children must be between the ages of 2 and 18, but do not have to be eligible for free and reduced-price meals. Adults cannot accept meals on behalf of children.

“Long before the decision was made to close schools, our incredible Food and Nutrition Services team was busy putting this plan together,” Superintendent George Arlotto said. “This model will follow the very successful one we have done for the last several summers and will enable us to continue to provide nutritious and delicious meals to students who depend on us for that service.”

The food will be in grab-and-go packages to avoid group settings that would pose risk for the spread of coronavirus.

On Thursday, Governor Larry Hogan along with the State Department of Education announced all public schools would close from March 16 to March 27.

During that time, all school buildings, offices, and buses will be deep cleaned, and restocked with supplies.

Baltimore County Public Schools is now offering grab and go meals for students from the the BCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services. BCPS will begin providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner at all sites, Wednesday, Mar. 18.

They will be available Monday-Friday from March 16-27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at several locations:
