Subway announced Wednesday it plans to close an addition 500 U.S. stores by the end of 2018.

The company did not say if any Maryland Subway stores will be closing.

Over the previous two years, the company has shut down hundreds of locations nationwide.

Currently, there are about 2,600 locations remaining in the U.S.

The closures come as Subway's overall sales have dropped. The company saw a 4.4 percent dip in sales in 2017 due to competition from newer chains and other fast food options.

In an effort to attract more customers, Subway is launching a new loyalty program, remodeling stores to look sleeker, and adding touch-screen kiosks for ordering.
