Walmart has pulled University of Maryland T-shirts with an outline of Massachusetts on them after pictures of the shirts were widely mocked on social media this week.

“We are working with Russell Athletic to determine how this happened and in the meantime are removing the shirt from our stores. We understand the pride Marylanders feel for the Terps, and apologize for the mistake,” a Walmart spokesman said in a statement.

A customer snapped a picture of the T-shirt, asking in a tweet why it had the shape of Massachusetts on it.

A company spokeswoman initially said that Maryland and Massachusetts look similar on a map. Then a second spokesperson apologized, saying the company "may never stick our head out of our shell again."
