BALTIMORE — For International Women's History Month we decided to give you a little history and insight on the women of WMAR.
Every week we will feature a different woman at the station, and we wanted to first highlight Good Morning Maryland anchor Ashley James.
1. Why did choose to work in the news?
I always loved the idea of being able to ask questions and tell stories for a living, but I was completely hooked after feeling the rush of breaking news during an internship in college.
2. Tell us a fun fact about yourself
I won a full scholarship to the University of Delaware after winning the Miss Delaware Teen USA pageant. I also have an M.B.A. degree.
3. What are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about family and friends. I've was raised with the old-school mentality that family and loyalty are everything.
4. Who inspires you?
I've been lucky enough to have so many family and friends that are constantly inspiring me to be a better person. I've always heard you should surround yourself with people "better" than yourself-- and I think that's so important. Professionally, I love Hoda Kotb. She has that "thing" that makes you feel like you know her-- and can trust what she says. It's an incredible gift to have in this business.
5. What does it mean to you to be a woman working in the news?
As a woman and mom working in news, I feel empowered in my career and in what the future holds. From the moment I knew I wanted to be a journalist, I worked so hard with so many crazy schedules to get to this point. To be able to reflect on how far I've come--starting out as a production assistant out of college working overnights--makes me know it was all worth it.
Stay tuned for another highlight next week!
