SEVERN, Md. — A 28-year-old man is dead after police say he was assaulted while attending a friend's birthday party in Severn.
Anne Arundel County officers were initially called to the 8300 block of Flintlock Court for reports of a sick or injured person.
Arriving officers soon found out there was more to the case.
Deontae Tyree Swingler, of Odenton, was found laying outside on the sidewalk suffering from obvious trauma to the body.
Despite lifesaving efforts by police and medics, Swingler died on scene.
Soon after witnesses alerted officers to the suspect, who was inside a car about to leave the scene.
Police were able to stop him in time, and eventually recovered Swingler's wallet and the bloody weapon suspected of killing him from the car.
Archie Sylvester Bowland III, 38, is now charged with the first and second degree murder.
Police revealed very little on what led to the deadly encounter, only saying that both men had been involved in an altercation that ended with Swingler being assaulted.
