Maryland state prisoner charged with murdering cellmate

A state prison inmate has been charged with murdering his cellmate back in January.

Johnnie L. Sellers, Jr., 37, is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

Sellers is accused of murdering Glenn E. Smith, 58. Both were state prison inmates serving time at the Jessup Correctional Institution.

State police said Smith was found in his cell with multiple injuries on Jan. 18.  He was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and died there Jan. 21.

An autopsy was conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.  The autopsy determined Smith’s death was a homicide, resulting from multiple blunt force injuries.

The investigation revealed Smith was last seen uninjured on the evening of Jan. 17.
